March 15th

Hello

Just the usual update and reminder of our market whereabouts over the next few weeks. The usual Rhiwbina on Friday mornings, Usk on Sat and Riverside on Sunday mornings. Porthcawl on Easter Sat. We have our usual range of Aberdeen Angus beef, South Wales Mountain lamb, mutton, pork and chickens. There are some lovely big chickens for Easter and our pork is especially good at the moment – the pigs have been outdoors all winter grazing turnips. They have done well and are rather fat. Perhaps, not to everyone's liking but, my word, the pork tastes good ...... The new hens are laying well so lots of eggs too. Pies and faggots as well.

This dry weather is very welcome and, although a bit cold at night and early mornings, the ground is starting to dry up even if the grass is not growing. We can't have both..... Spring ploughing ready for sowing barley, oats and peas will start on the weekend -- The Fforest / Cefn Coed is earlier than Penrhiw. We still have overcoats on up here !! Lambing and calving have started again at Penrhiw. Remember the visits from next door's ram lambs last autumn - well they were busy and we are now seeing the results of their work !!! So it is back to the early morning walks – no more lie in for me. Had a lovely pedigree bull calf sired by one of our home bred bulls which is rather nice. He will be called Penrhiw Emperor (don't ask why – I am running out of inspiration for names beginning with 'E' !!

Have been riding Flo – she was so well behaved - all that fretting ......
