I am trying to get back into the routine of regular emails / updates so fingers crossed I can keep this up ! This coming weekend we will be attending Rhiwbina on Friday, Usk on Sat and Riverside on Sunday with our usual range of organic meat as well as pies, faggots and eggs. Local deliveries and collections from the farm by arrangement – these are actually very few and far between these days !
The early lambing has finished – we waited quite a time for the last ewe to lamb but she obliged when I was in Rhiwbina market last Friday. Managing to have a slight lie in for a week or so until the cows start calving then it will be lambing time all over again. We have separated the ewes scanned for twins and singles and started feeding the twin carriers with some supplementary hard feed to help them through the latter stages of pregnancy – hay / silage alone can't support nutritional needs of the ewe and the 2 growing lambs. The singles cope well enough on hay – if we feed them the lambs would grow too big and the ewe would have difficulty during birth.
Some horsey news – Hetty, the foal, is growing up rapidly and has been weaned. I am going to start riding Flo again very soon – she is going to need a few reminders what a saddle is before I actually sit on her back. If I am not careful I may well get bucked off and I don't bounce so well these days ! Fingers crossed she remembers what life as riding horse is – she has had almost 18 months off ........a friend warned me today she looks a bit feral !!!! Hetty, meanwhile, has a little cob foal to keep her company. They play out the field all day and come in by night for food and a straw bed.
Finally a date for the diary – we are going to have a farm open day on May bank holiday Monday afternoon (2nd May). More details will follow in due course.
